I LOVED series I and II, HATED series III (oh well, I can always pretend that series III never happened!). Too bad we couldn't pick "favorite villains." I would have picked Bent and Virgilla (I'm Southern, so of course I consider Virgilla to be a vilain-she started the war all by herself! ^_^) Other great Civil War films I would recommend: Gettysburg (and the upcoming prequel and sequel, Gods and Generals & The Last Full Measure), The Blue and The Gray, Glory, and of course Gone With the Wind! I taped the series from commercial tv origionally and it is wearing out from all the play. I guess it is time to buy the studio version. I live in Charleston and get to see a lot of the movie sites whenever I want to. Boone Hall is a sight to behold as you walk up to it knowing it was used in the film as Mont Royal.

I first saw this series on video at a friends house. I then rushed to my video store and borrowed them all out. Although I loved book 1 and 2 I did not like book 3. I have read all 3 books and I think that book 3 was badly filmed. Although Orry was not in the book and the book focused more on Charles I still liked it. Book 3 ended better than the film did with the reunion of Billy and Charles at west point with their two sons starting there. In the book George and Madeline do get together but it is after g orge goes away to Europe and grieves for Constance. Alot of book 3 is madeline's journal to her beloved Orry. She writes what is happening to try and maintain some link with Orry. In the film Madeline hardly grieves at all and it makes it look like she re lly did not love Orry as much as she claimed. In the book the union is more of a partnership- madeline tells george that she does not really love him but does want to be with him

This blows my mind! I can't believe there are other N&S fanatics out there! I have seen all 20-something hours of this mini-series several times and it is by far the best one ever produced. My husband and I traveled to Louisiana two yrs ago and visited Greenwood Plantation which was used as Justin Lamont's "Resolute". Much of the interior looks the same as they didn't change a lot back after filming. I remember standing in the upstairs hall ay, telling my husband (who thinks I was completely mental about this) "and this is the room where Madeline was held captive...and Orry threw Justin out this window here..." It was awesome. Great page...keep up the good work!!

I've just completed viewing both Book I & Book II, finally having time to do this since the children have grown and gone :) What a mini-series! The acting was superb, the costumes to die for, scenery was great and, oh - those houses! I haven't read the books yet, (I'm still working my way through the Kent Family Chronicles. I'm up to Book #6 now.) John Jakes is such a marvelous author. His characters jump from both the page and screen, into our hearts. As for romance, can anything beat having the ma you love come galloping down that long path leading to Mont Royal?! Be still my heart. My great-grandfather fought for the north in the Civil War, so anything along those lines is of keen interest to me. I am anxious to read the books now. I'm glad to know others have adopted these characters as extended family members too. (Am I the o ly one who thinks James Read looks like a young Robert Goulet?) Interesting web page. Well done in many ways. Thanks for all the time and effort given to it.

Let me start by saying that I'm tremendously relieved to find that are so many other enthusiastic N&S fans! For years I was convinced that I was all alone. I'm a HUGE fan of all of Jakes' books. It's really incredible to see them come to life on the screen, even if the script strays from Jakes' original prose from time to time. Has anyone read the Kent family chronicles? The Bastard, The Rebels, and The Seekers, were also released as a series during the early 80s. Not nearly as well done as N&S, but entertaining nonetheless. It is interesting, I knew I became addicted to the flick when I realized that I was dwelling on it a ton more than I have ever dwelt on a movie that I loved. I realized however, that I am not alone. In an evening chatting with my roommate, I confessed t is to her, and she admitted to the same addiction. So, Hi, my name is Buffi, and I am a North-and-South-a-holic. Often it becomes what distracts me from studying. Sometimes I make it my reward for studying, so I am motivated to get a lot of studying do e (I am a college student). And other times, I watch it in the same way someone would eat comfort food in a time of stress. It is my comfort food. My tow roommates and I use the names of the characters as code names for each other. And the evil charact rs are code names for people we don't get along with. Our apartment is Mont Royal. Is there a twelve step program for this? Actually, in the insanity of college, it is what helps keep us sane, in a way.

I feel that this movie was right on the button when it told some true interesting facts about civil war history. I feel that the actors and actresses did a wonderful job in acting. I love North and South. I have many favorite scenes but the two that are my absolute favorite when George comes home and finds Constance dead.( Book 3 Ep. 1) and after the funeral when he goes into his office and cries and tells his foreman that he doesn t know what to do with her things.(Book 3 Ep. 2) That always makes me cry. Has anyone read the books. I think that John Jakes is a good writer, but in the second book Charlie's horse dies and right away in the third book the horse is back. Also is Jona han Frakes(Stanley) in a Star Trek movie or the show?

Also, the scene h re George eventually comes home from Prison camp at Cristmas always breaks my heart and I begin to cry. Another fave is Billy coming home from war and where Brett and Semiramis return to Mount Royal after being caught.

I was 9 when North and South first came out and one of my favorite memories is calling my friend as soon as they were over and talking about what happened until our parents made us get off the phone. I got all first 12 videos of books I/II for Christmas ears ago and have watched it innumerable times and I still laugh and cry as if it were the first time. I make all of my friends watch it and have gotten all of them hooked too. I would love to find book III on video and the CD if you know how. I just finished "North and South: Book 2" and have started on Part I of "Heaven and Hell". After watching both, I realized that although N&SII is superior to H&H, I prefer watching the latter. Both "Heaven and Hell" and "North and South: Book 1" are a l t easier to watch than Book 2. The second half of "Book 2" is too slow and rather depressing. Also, it is filled with pretensious dialogue every time someone mentions the war. I'm sure I'll be castigated for this, but I can't help what I feel. Be sati fied that I still consider "Book 2" superior to "H&H".

I really enjoy North and South. I read the books and enjoyed them as well. I was sad of the fact that Orry died in the book. I am trying to figure out how to watch the third part of the North and South series. And I am glad that there is such an awesome website.
